Going walkabout with Kakadu Plum
We, at Robins Foods, are great fans of Australia's kakadu plum. We love it for its fantastic nutritional qualities and its delicate citrus taste. Apart from being extraordinarily high in antioxidants the kakadu plum has also one of the highest fruit source of Vitamin C in the world. We make some great products from Kakadu Plum , including our new range of Outback Spirit Rejuvenating waters and our Outback Spirit Kakadu Plum Sweet Chilli Sauce- read more below.
Indigenous Australians, have developed businesses based on the harvest of the Kakadu Plum fruit and many tonnes of the fruit can be harvested using Aboriginal land care practices which allows for responsible harvesting alongside a deep respect for country and protection of the trees so they keep producing year after year. Most of our fruit come from the Broome region and are harvested in this traditional and sustainable manner by our Indigenous partners, Indigenous Harvesters Australia.

The Kakadu Plum is not just endemic to the Kakadu region, but is found right across the Top End from East Arnhem Land in the east to the Kimberly and Broome in the west.
The fruit is commonly known as Kakadu Plum but this is a convenient 'white fella' name that does not reflect the deep affinity and pride that many Indigenous people have for this important food tree. In the west around Broome it is known and proudly promoted by its true local Indigenous name of Gubinge and across in the East Arnhem lands it is known as Murunga and there are many local Indigenous names for this fruit in between. Because there are many Indigenous names for this fruit, the generic name Kakadu Plum has been accepted in the marketplace and with the greatest respect we shall use this name for the fruit for easy identification. The use of the name 'plum' is quite strange too. The fruit is nothing like a plum. In fact it looks like a small or immature olive and the structure of the fruit is more that of a mango, with a woody, central stone that the flesh adheres strongly to.
The tree is prolific in these coastal regions and the mature trees are tall and slender and have a wide canopy and a spreading habit. They have broad, large green leaves and the fruit hangs in small clusters which ripen in summer. It is common to see many trees dotted across the country, of all ages and stages of growth. A mature tree can be a prolific bearer, yielding up to 50kg of fruit in a good season. Like many bush fruits however, yields can vary significantly from year to year and often tropical cyclones or bush fires can wreak havoc on the trees. However this tropical coastal country is very beautiful and almost park-like with its vistas of beautiful trees.

Ian McDonald , Managing Director of Coles launched Outback Spirit Rejuvenating Waters at Coles Head Office in Melbourne. Two members of the Indigenous Harvesters Australia co-operative from Broome, Amy, Selina and Selina King, attended the launch and explained how important the harvest of gubibge (local name for the plum) is for them and their families from an economic and cultural perspective. We thank Ian McLoud for hosting the launch and thank Ian and Amy and Selina King from Broome for joining us in launching Outback Spirit Rejuvenating Waters.
